What I Always Pack for an Emerald Coast Vacation Rental

Pack smarter for your Emerald Coast vacation rental with local tips on what's actually worth bringing, what to skip, beach hacks locals swear by, and simple tricks that make Destin, Miramar Beach, and 30A trips far less stressful.

For first-time vacationers, packing for an Emerald Coast trip might sound simple, but I have to tell you there are many things you should consider before trying to "pack light."

As a Floridian, destinations like Destin, Miramar Beach, and 30A are some of my go-to spots for uncomplicated family trips within the state. Another constant in my Emerald Coast vacations? Staying in a vacation rental.

If that's also your accommodation choice for your next Florida getaway, I have plenty of tips and tricks on how to pack properly so you can make the most of your time not only in the destination itself, but also in your home away from home - even if it's only for a couple of days.

Below, I've put together a guide on what to pack and what to skip for your Emerald Coast vacation rental based on years of vacationing in this beautiful part of Florida.

Before we start filling suitcases and beach bags, a little hi from us:

First Things First: Most Vacation Rentals Only Give You a "Starter Pack"

Vacation rentals indeed provide almost everything you need for a comfortable and convenient stay, but that doesn't mean there will be an endless supply of household basics if you're staying for a prolonged period of time.

Most Emerald Coast vacation rentals only provide a small "starter supply" of household basics, usually enough to survive the first day or two before you need to restock. In most cases, that means one or two toilet paper rolls, a single paper towel roll, a few trash bags, and sometimes a small laundry detergent packet. That's pretty much it.

One of the best packing tricks for an Emerald Coast rental is separating your trip into two simple categories:

  • Beach stuff
  • Temporary household setup

A lot of travelers pack for the beach and completely forget they're also temporarily moving into a condo or beach house for several days.

What I Always Pack

Two Swimsuits Per Person

This sounds excessive if you're only spending a couple of days, but you'll understand once you experience Florida humidity.

Swimsuits dry slower than many people expect along the Gulf Coast, particularly inside condos with salty air and humid balconies. So why not have a second dry swimsuit ready for beach outings?

Rash guards are also worth packing for long water days, paddleboarding sessions, or boating trips.

Baby Powder (Yes, Seriously)

No joke! This is one of the oldest Emerald Coast hacks around.

Baby powder helps remove stuck-on sand from your feet, legs, and hands almost instantly. Dry skin plus baby powder lets sand brush right off instead of turning into a sticky mess all over the car or rental floor.

Awesome, right? It works every time.

Beach Bag Essentials I Never Skip

You might also think this is too much, but I like packing for beach days like a pro because I want things to stay comfortable for everyone. So here's what my Emerald Coast beach bag essentials usually include:

  • Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Pack a broad-spectrum, reef-safe sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to 50+ to protect both your skin and the local marine life.

  • SPF Lip Balm: Include a tube of lip balm with SPF to prevent chapped, sunburned lips from the salty breeze.

  • Eye and Head Protection: Ensure you have polarized sunglasses that block UV rays and a wide-brimmed hat or sun cap for extra shade.

  • Post-Sun Care: Keep aloe vera or after-sun lotion in the bag for immediate relief if you spend too much time in the rays.

  • Baby Powder or Swiffer Duster: These are amazing hacks for brushing sand off your skin effortlessly.

  • Specialized Towels: Use oversized, quick-dry microfiber beach towels, which take up less space in your bag and handle humidity better than cotton.

  • Towel Bands: Pack these to secure your towel to your chair so it doesn't fly away in the Gulf breeze.

  • Sand-Proof Blanket: An XXL sand-proof beach blanket or mat provides a clean area for the family to spread out.

  • Waterproof Protection: Use waterproof phone pouches or dry bags to shield electronics from sand, splashes, and sudden rain.

  • Power Bank: A portable charger is always good to keep devices alive during long days of taking photos and using maps.

  • Insulated Water Bottles: Use reusable, insulated bottles to keep water cold for hours in the Florida heat.

  • Insulated Cooler Bag: A small soft-sided cooler or insulated bag within your setup keeps fresh fruit, light snacks, and drinks chilled.

  • Reusable Snack Containers: These prevent snacks from getting crushed and help you avoid creating extra waste on the beach.

One "AC Layer"

People imagine Florida and assume nonstop heat. But Emerald Coast restaurants, grocery stores, and entertainment venues blast air conditioning aggressively during summer. Meanwhile, Gulf evenings during spring and fall can get breezy. One lightweight hoodie or sweater takes care of both situations.

The Three-Shoe Rule

You really only need:

  1. Flip-flops
  2. Comfortable sneakers or sandals
  3. Water shoes

That's it. It's as simple as that.

Water shoes are often overlooked by vacationers, but around jetties, rocky shoreline sections, piers, and shell-heavy areas, they're truly essential.

Extra Household Supplies

Coming back to the household supplies I mentioned earlier, you don't want to waste half your suitcase space with dishwasher pods and toilet paper, right? It doesn't look glamorous, and it's an unnecessary weight.

So instead of packing every household basic you'll eventually need to restock during a longer stay in an Emerald Coast vacation rental, it's smarter to plan an early supermarket run and buy everything once you arrive. That way, you won't have to worry about it for the rest of the trip.

Of course, if you want to save a few bucks and bring some things from home, why not?

What I always pack/buy:

  • Extra toilet paper
  • Paper towels
  • Dishwasher pods
  • Laundry detergent
  • Trash bags
  • Ziploc bags
  • Disinfectant wipes
  • Aluminum foil (for those planning to cook at the rental)

None of these are exciting purchases, but running out of them mid-trip can be frustrating, particularly during busy summer weeks when a when grocery stores look completely chaotic.

What I Usually Skip Packing

Bulky Beach Gear

Large umbrellas, heavy beach chairs, giant floaties, and oversized beach carts eat up a shocking amount of car space. Many Emerald Coast rentals already provide some beach equipment, while local companies around Destin and Miramar Beach also rent gear directly on the sand or deliver it straight to your rental.

Before packing anything bulky, always check with the host first.

Some rentals already include:

  • Beach chairs
  • Umbrellas
  • Coolers
  • Beach toys
  • Snorkel gear
  • Professional beach setup service

Heavy Clothes

The Emerald Coast and heavy denim are not friends.

Thick jeans and heavy fabrics stay humid forever, dry slowly, and usually end up uncomfortable once temperatures climb. Lightweight cotton, linen, athletic fabrics, and moisture-wicking clothes are the way to go.

Formal Outfits

Unless you have a wedding, upscale dinner reservation, or a very specific event planned, the dress code here is extremely casual. Outings along the Emerald Coast are more focused on beach bars, seafood restaurants, and waterfront patios. So nice sandals, a breezy dress shirt, or a simple sundress already cover almost everything.

Kitchen Appliances

Most vacation rentals already include:

  • Coffee makers
  • Toasters
  • Blenders
  • Pots and pans
  • Basic cookware

You generally do not need to pack appliances unless your meal plans involve making something very specific in an air fryer or Crock-Pot.

A Few Last Emerald Coast Packing Tips

The Grocery Trick That Saves Time

This might be the best practical tip in this entire article.

Check-in days along the Emerald Coast can get chaotic. As I already mentioned, supermarkets near the beaches often fill with travelers all trying to buy groceries at the same moment, particularly during peak seasons.

Scheduling grocery pickup or delivery for your arrival in the afternoon saves an unbelievable amount of time and stress. Many experienced visitors already have groceries waiting at the rental before they even walk inside.

Don't Pack Like You're Visiting Miami

Places like Destin, Miramar Beach, and Santa Rosa Beach are all about comfort, beach time, seafood dinners, and relaxed coastal living. Pack for beach mornings, sunset walks, balcony dinners, fishing trips, breezy evenings, and long, lazy afternoons near the Gulf.
